Description
Autumn Beech celebrates the dramatic transformation of a Japanese beech bonsai as its foliage turns to the brilliant colors of autumn.
The intense oranges, golds, and reds of the foliage give the tree a commanding presence against an active patterned background of cool blue-green and golden tones. I was particularly interested in this complementary color relationship—the warmth of the autumn canopy pushing forward while the cooler background creates movement and space around it.
Beneath that color is the character of an old bonsai. The substantial trunk conveys age, strength, and the passage of time, while the broad, highly textured glazed pot provides a visual foundation for the tree. Rather than simply containing the bonsai, the pot becomes part of the painting’s surface and contributes to its sense of permanence and weight.
As with the other works in my mixed-media bonsai series, the background is not intended to represent a literal landscape. Pattern, texture, drawing, and color create an environment in which the bonsai can exist almost as a living sculpture. The contrast between the ordered decorative pattern and the organic irregularity of the tree helps give Autumn Beech its energy.
For me, the painting is ultimately about the majesty that can be found in a small tree—the accumulated character of age combined with the fleeting brilliance of a single season.
