Description
Crinkled Crepe celebrates the remarkable character of a Chirimen Vine bonsai, a tree shaped by more than 60 years of slow growth and careful cultivation. Named for its distinctive crinkled leaves, the tree possesses a commanding presence through its broad, powerful nebari (surface roots), aged trunk, and beautifully developed canopy.
The antique bonsai pot reinforces the tree’s sense of age and permanence, providing a visual foundation for the dense, flowing foliage above. Together, the trunk, roots, and pot express the passage of time and the quiet strength of a living sculpture.
What particularly interests me in this painting is the relationship between the tree and its surrounding space. The full, dark green canopy stands against a vibrant background of orange, turquoise, and geometric patterns. Rather than serving as simple decoration, these energetic marks and complementary colors actively enhance the organic structure of the bonsai.
Through layers of mixed-media mark-making, contrasting textures, and expressive color, I explore the relationship between the disciplined cultivation of bonsai and the spontaneity of painting. The patterned background introduces movement and visual energy, while the tree maintains its monumental and tranquil presence.
Crinkled Crepe is an exploration of time, structure, and the enduring beauty of bonsai, where the organic and geometric come together to create a dynamic visual experience.
