Description
Flower Moon celebrates the enduring beauty of an aged Satsuki azalea bonsai still producing an extraordinary display of flowers.
The mature trunk provides a strong, dark foundation beneath a canopy filled with soft whites, pinks, and saturated reds. I wanted the flowering tree to feel almost luminous, so I placed it against an active, patterned background of blues, muted pinks, and warmer earth tones. These complementary color relationships allow the flowers to emerge from the surrounding surface while keeping the tree connected to the entire composition.
The background is intentionally more than decoration. Pattern, texture, and layered mark-making create visual movement around the bonsai, while the solidity of the trunk and pot anchors the composition. The contrast gives the tree a sense of age, presence, and majesty.
As with much of my recent bonsai work, Flower Moon is an exploration of the bonsai not simply as a botanical subject, but as a living sculptural form shaped by time.
