Description
Flowing Juniper is inspired by the movement I see within a mature juniper bonsai. The foliage and striated deadwood create a rhythm that reminds me of flowing water and drifting clouds. The eye moves back and forth through the tree and from top to bottom, giving the composition a sense of continuous, life-giving energy.
That movement is one of the qualities that makes bonsai so compelling to me as a bonsai artist. A bonsai is more than a representation of a tree—it can become a kind of living sculpture, shaped over time while continuing to grow and change.
In this mixed-media work, I wanted the surrounding patterns to participate in that movement rather than simply provide a background. Repeated organic and geometric marks move around the silhouette of the juniper, while the deep greens of the foliage and pale twisting deadwood establish the tree as the visual center of the composition.
The contrast between living foliage and weathered deadwood is also fundamental to the character of an old juniper. One speaks of continued growth while the other carries evidence of age and survival. Together they give the tree its strength, movement, and individuality.
Flowing Juniper is part of my continuing exploration of bonsai through mixed media—bringing together my experience as both an artist and bonsai practitioner.
