Description
Jin Shari Shimpaku captures the extraordinary character of a 200-year-old Shimpaku juniper bonsai, where the passage of time has shaped an elegant relationship between living growth and weathered deadwood.
Central to the painting is the dramatic movement of the trunk, where Jin (dead branches) and Shari (exposed deadwood along the trunk) intertwine visually with the living vein that continues to sustain the tree. This flowing relationship between life and death creates a sculptural presence that speaks to resilience, endurance, and the beauty that emerges through age.
The carefully developed foliage pads provide a counterbalance to the powerful movement of the trunk. Their robust, rounded forms communicate continued vitality, while their placement and proportion reinforce the tree’s remarkable age and maturity. Beneath this living sculpture, a modest, textured bonsai pot provides a quiet foundation, allowing the expressive character of the tree to dominate the composition.
The background moves beyond a decorative setting. Layers of geometric patterns, complementary colors, and energetic brushwork create a sense of spatial depth, contrasting the organic structure of the bonsai with an active, almost timeless environment. Subdued Japanese kanji, representing love, harmony, happiness, tranquility, and beauty, are integrated into the composition, adding meaning without overwhelming the tree.
Through this interaction of living and weathered forms, expressive color, and layered symbolism, Jin Shari Shimpaku explores a central principle of bonsai aesthetics: beauty is not simply found in youth or perfection, but in the visible evidence of time, survival, and transformation.
Part of Ron Reekers’ Bonsai Oil Painting Trilogy, this large-scale original painting celebrates bonsai as living sculpture while exploring the relationship between traditional Japanese aesthetics and contemporary Western painting.
