I did this pleinair painting back within the foliage looking out to the lower pond of the Japanese Friendship Garden in San Diego Balboa Park. I loved the way the bonsai stood statuesque over the pond. The silhouette of the tree perfectly harmonized the landscape around it. The scene itself provide a motif where I could play with color and light.
I make my oil paintings are from professional grade oil paints. I allow the brilliance of the colors to enhance the view and emotion of the work. The goal is to express the Southern California light and the feeling of the day in which I painted it.
