Hime Moso Bamboo Monoprint #3 – A Playful Harmony of Nature and Color

Hime Moso Bamboo Monoprint #3 celebrates the playful relationship between foreground and background, where the disciplined structure of a bamboo forest meets a whimsical world of color, texture, and expressive mark-making.

The bold, dark woodblock impression establishes a rhythmic collection of bamboo leaves and slender stalks, creating an intricate silhouette against an energized background. Vibrant reds and warm yellows transition into refreshing greens and turquoise, giving the composition a joyful sense of movement and vitality. Inspired by the remarkable color combinations of Japanese color theorist Sanzo Wada, the palette brings harmony to an otherwise exuberant visual environment.

There is a rustic quality to the artwork that touches upon the Japanese aesthetic of sabi, where the passage of time, weathering, and imperfection contribute to beauty. The textured surfaces and irregular patterns of the Gelli printing process suggest a natural environment shaped by the elements, while the bamboo remains strong and unified within its surroundings.

The broad, understated planting base anchors the composition, providing a sense of stability amid the playful interaction of positive and negative space. This balance between structure and spontaneity creates an engaging dialogue between the natural world and artistic imagination.

For me, the seriousness of this artwork lies in the thoughtful process of its creation, but the delight emerges through its harmonious execution. What begins as a disciplined exploration of woodblock printing, color relationships, and composition becomes a whimsical celebration of nature’s beauty.

Created through a combination of hand-carved woodblock printing, Gelli plate monoprinting, and expressive mixed media techniques, this is a one-of-a-kind original monoprint. The process is similar to that demonstrated in my Ota Azalea Woodblock YouTube series.
