Description
Crystal Cove Re-Imagined is less a depiction of a place than a record of its transformation. The painting begins with the experience of Crystal Cove and follows it through observation, memory, digital exploration, drawing, and painting. Each process changes the image. Together they create a landscape that could not be reached through a single medium.
The work started as a plein-air painting made on location. I also photographed the scene to document the changing light. Back in the studio, I created a pastel drawing from the painting. The painting, drawing, and photograph were then digitally combined to guide the final mixed media artwork.
The finished piece brings together monotype, stencil printing, acrylic, and pastel. Each technique contributes its own marks and visual language. Rather than hiding the process, the painting allows every stage to remain visible.
The stencil marks are not decorative patterns. They are another form of mark making. Like brushwork or drawing, they create rhythm, movement, and visual vibration across the surface. Light on the cliffs and ocean contrasts with the shadowed hillside, balancing observation with abstraction.
Part of the Re-Imagined Landscapes series, this painting continues my exploration of how ideas change as they move through different artistic processes. The final work is not simply an image of Crystal Cove. It is the accumulated performance of many ways of seeing and making.
