Description
Shipley Walk was painted during an early spring plein air session at Shipley Nature Center. The painting marked my return to outdoor painting after a long break. It also helped prepare me for my upcoming Cambria painting trip.
That afternoon, the landscape was filled with vibrant orange California poppies and purple spring flowers. Visitors moved quietly along the trails and stopped to enjoy the colors of the season. As I painted, a group of women walked through the scene. Their movement added rhythm and a human connection to the composition.
I was especially drawn to the contrast between the warm orange flowers and the cooler purple field behind them. In addition, the changing spring light created shifting color relationships across the landscape. Because of this, the painting became more than a simple record of the location. Instead, it became an expressive response to the experience of being there.
The brushwork remains loose and energetic throughout the painting. Likewise, the layered color helps create atmosphere and movement. My goal was not simply to describe the landscape, but to communicate the feeling of walking through Shipley Nature Center during spring.
