Cypress Twin Monoprint #1 – A Harmony of Strength and Affection
Cypress Twin Monoprint #1 explores the harmonious relationship between two trunks of a mature bonsai, expressing a sense of protection, affection, and mutual dependence through the natural elegance of the tree.
The taller trunk rises with strength and authority, extending its branches like a protective parent offering shelter and shade. The smaller trunk curves gently toward its companion, suggesting an affectionate response to this protective presence. Together, the two forms create a visual relationship that transcends the botanical structure, becoming an expression of the intimate connections found in life.
The woodblock was designed and hand-carved from Japanese-style printmaking plywood traditionally associated with Ukiyo-e techniques. Its bold graphic character provides a strong foundation for the expressive background, created through a Gelli plate monoprint transfer process. This technique, demonstrated in my Ota Azalea Woodblock YouTube series, allows each impression to develop its own unique character.
The vibrant color relationships are inspired by the carefully studied combinations of Japanese color theorist Sanzo Wada. Brilliant reds, oranges, greens, and blues create an energized, almost mysterious atmosphere surrounding the tree. Broken passages of color and open spaces suggest a world of beauty, uncertainty, and movement.
Against this restless background, the twin trunks remain connected and harmonious. The contrast between the dramatic environment and the quiet affection expressed through the tree’s structure gives the composition its emotional strength.
What I particularly appreciate about this monoprint is how the visceral quality of the carved woodblock and the unpredictable character of the printed background work together. The image becomes more than a representation of a bonsai; it becomes a reflection on relationships, resilience, and the beauty of interdependence.
Each monoprint is a unique original artwork, combining traditional relief printmaking with contemporary mixed-media techniques.
