Cypress Twin Monoprint #2 – Harmony and Resilience
Cypress Twin Monoprint #2 explores the enduring relationship between two bonsai trunks and the strength that emerges through their shared experience of nature.
The taller trunk rises with a protective presence, while the smaller trunk curves gracefully toward its companion. Together, they suggest a relationship of affection, support, and interdependence. Rather than existing independently, the two trunks gain strength through their connection, creating a harmonious expression of unity and resilience.
Surrounding the tree is a vibrant, energized background filled with brilliant greens, deep blues, and expressive magentas. The textured patterns evoke the beauty and unpredictability of nature, suggesting an environment that can both challenge and strengthen the relationship between the two trunks. Amid this visual energy, the bonsai remains firmly rooted, its twisting branches and powerful trunk structure expressing endurance and adaptability.
The modest bonsai pot provides a quiet foundation for the composition. Its simple, weathered appearance reflects the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi, where beauty is found in imperfection, simplicity, and the passage of time. Though understated, the pot anchors the tree and brings a sense of stability to the surrounding movement.
Created through a combination of traditional woodblock printing and contemporary monoprint techniques, this artwork incorporates a hand-carved woodblock and a uniquely textured background produced through a Gelli printing transfer process. The expressive color relationships are inspired by the combinations documented by Japanese color theorist Sanzo Wada.
Like the other works in this series, Cypress Twin Monoprint #2 is a unique original artwork. While the carved woodblock provides a common image, the individually developed background, color application, and printing process ensure that no two impressions are alike.
Ultimately, this monoprint is a celebration of relationships and resilience. The two trunks stand together, not in opposition to their environment, but strengthened through their shared existence within it.
An original woodblock monoprint by Ron Reekers, celebrating the beauty of bonsai, the strength of relationships, and the enduring harmony found in nature.
