Cypress Twin Monoprint #3 explores the enduring relationship between two bonsai trunks, symbolizing the connection between parent and child, the passage of time, and the continuity of life through generations.
The dramatic silhouettes of the intertwined trunks stand boldly against a highly saturated, luminous background. Brilliant greens, turquoise blues, fiery reds, and warm yellows suggest the fleeting brilliance of a sunset—a moment when the beauty of nature becomes both powerful and sentimental.
The taller trunk rises with strength and authority, while the smaller trunk reaches outward in a graceful, complementary gesture. Together, they express a relationship of protection, affection, and mutual dependence. Their shared foundation reinforces the idea that strength and beauty develop through relationships cultivated over time.
The expressive background, created through a Gelli plate monoprint transfer process, introduces an energetic contrast to the dark, graphic qualities of the hand-carved woodblock. The color relationships are inspired by the historic combinations of Japanese color theorist Sanzo Wada, bringing a contemporary vibrancy to a traditional bonsai motif.
Beneath the trees, a modest, aged bonsai pot provides a visual foundation, reflecting the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi—the appreciation of simplicity, imperfection, and beauty acquired through time.
