Euro Beech Monoprint #3 – Order Within Chaos

Euro Beech Monoprint #3 is perhaps the most mysterious and enigmatic of the Euro Beech series. The bold woodblock image of a mature bonsai emerges from a richly textured and energized background, where the boundaries between foliage and atmosphere become beautifully ambiguous.

The intricate foliage seems to merge with the surrounding colors and patterns, creating a fascinating relationship between order and chaos. There is an almost Yin and Yang quality to this interaction, where opposing forces complement one another and give rise to something greater than either could achieve independently.

The powerful trunk and carefully structured foliage pads establish a sense of stability and permanence. Yet the vibrant background, with its saturated yellows, oranges, blues, and dark passages, introduces movement, uncertainty, and mystery. The bonsai exists within this environment, neither dominating nor surrendering to it.

What I find particularly compelling about this monoprint is how the creative process produced something beyond my original intentions. In artmaking, there are moments when materials, technique, and chance come together to reveal an unexpected beauty. These discoveries are among the great joys of creating art.

The process follows the same woodblock and Gelli printing techniques demonstrated in my Ota Azalea Woodblock YouTube series. Inspired by Sanzo Wada’s color combinations, the composition brings together traditional Japanese bonsai aesthetics and contemporary mixed media printmaking.

Each monoprint is unique, with its own combination of color, texture, and expressive mark-making.

Euro Beech Monoprint #3 celebrates the mystery of creation, where order and chaos coexist, and something unexpected and beautiful emerges.
