Description
Golden Bean — Mixed Media Bonsai
Golden Bean is my interpretation of a Kinzu bonsai, a tree admired for its small, colorful fruit, delicate foliage, and distinctive trunk structure.
In creating this mixed media painting, I wanted to emphasize the abundance and vibrancy of the fruit. Bright pinks, reds, and warm orange tones dance throughout the foliage, contrasting with the rich greens of the leaves. The complementary colors extend into the textured background, creating a lively interplay between the tree and its surroundings.
The powerful trunk and spreading nebari (surface roots) establish a natural pedestal for the composition, giving the tree a sense of age, stability, and strength. Beneath it, the glazed bonsai pot provides another opportunity to explore color and texture. I deliberately gave the pot an aged appearance, suggesting the beauty that develops through years of use and exposure to the elements.
The layered marks, expressive colors, and varied textures move the painting beyond a literal representation of bonsai. They celebrate the relationship between nature, time, and artistic interpretation.
For me, Golden Bean is a celebration of color, vitality, and the quiet dignity of an aged bonsai.
