Description
Ota Azalea is an original woodblock print inspired by a magnificent Japanese azalea bonsai associated with bonsai master Ota Shigeyuki. The tree’s remarkable structure, refined proportions, and harmonious composition reflect the artistry and patience that define the Japanese bonsai tradition.
The bonsai’s multiple trunks emerge from a broad, powerful base, creating an intricate relationship of movement, strength, and balance. Rising from this foundation, the branches support a wide, densely developed canopy, with carefully arranged foliage pads that establish rhythm and visual harmony throughout the tree.
The shallow, understated bonsai pot reinforces the horizontal character of the composition without competing with the tree itself. Together, the powerful base, elegant branching, and expansive canopy create a sense of age, dignity, and quiet monumentality.
In translating this bonsai into a woodblock print, I sought to capture its essential character through expressive carved lines and the dramatic contrast of black ink against white paper. The reduction of the image to black and white emphasizes the tree’s structure, negative spaces, and sculptural presence.
This artwork is also the subject of my Ota Azalea YouTube series, where I explore the creative process from selecting and drawing the original bonsai image through carving the woodblock and producing the final prints.
Ota Azalea is a limited edition of 100 original woodblock prints, offering collectors an opportunity to own an artwork that celebrates the intersection of traditional Japanese bonsai aesthetics and contemporary printmaking.
