Ota Azalea Monoprint #2 – A Contemporary Interpretation of Bonsai Beauty

Ota Azalea Monoprint #2 celebrates the expressive possibilities of traditional Japanese bonsai imagery through contemporary printmaking, color, and patterned abstraction.

Created from my original Ota Azalea woodblock, this one-of-a-kind monoprint combines the bold graphic structure of relief printing with a richly textured background, expressive stencil mark-making, and an unconventional color palette inspired by Japanese color theorist Sanzo Wada.

The distinctive purple trunk is particularly important to this composition. Although unusual in nature, its color creates a striking visual relationship with the dark foliage, subtle greens, and vibrant orange and pink background. Drawn from one of Wada’s four-color combinations, these colors establish a harmonious yet energized aesthetic that moves beyond a literal representation of the bonsai.

The background incorporates swirling ornamental patterns reminiscent of traditional Japanese decorative art. These stylized forms interact with contemporary textures and layered printmaking techniques, creating a dynamic contrast between the organic structure of the bonsai and the abstract space surrounding it.

The Ota Azalea itself remains the central subject. Its multiple trunks rise from a unified base, supporting a broad, balanced canopy. The powerful black woodblock impression provides the structural foundation of the image, while the individually developed colors and background give this monoprint its unique character.

Unlike a conventional edition of identical prints, each Ota Azalea monoprint shares the original woodblock image but is individually composed through variations in color, background, and mark-making. Monoprint #2 is therefore a unique original artwork, not a reproduction.

The creation of the Ota Azalea woodblock and its monoprints is documented in my Ota Azalea Woodblock YouTube series, where I explore the artistic decisions and printmaking processes behind this collection.
