Description
Ota Azalea Monoprint #3 explores the Japanese aesthetic of Ma (間), where the space surrounding an object becomes as meaningful as the object itself. Through simplicity of color, an open atmosphere, and a harmonious figure-ground relationship, this artwork expresses a quiet sense of beauty and tranquility.
The multi-trunk Ota Azalea bonsai rises gracefully into a spacious background of luminous blues, soft turquoise, and warm yellow. The lavender-purple trunks complement the surrounding colors, creating a visual relationship in which the tree and its environment become inseparable elements of the composition.
Unlike the more active and patterned backgrounds of the other Ota Azalea monoprints, this work emphasizes openness and restraint. The bold black graphics of the woodblock establish the structure and strength of the bonsai, while the delicate textures and subtle mark-making of the monoprinted background suggest atmosphere, light, and space.
The color relationships are inspired by the harmonious combinations documented by Japanese color theorist Sanzo Wada. Here, the limited palette creates a sense of unity, allowing the organic structure of the bonsai and the surrounding negative space to interact in a way that is both visually engaging and contemplative.
Each Ota Azalea monoprint begins with the same hand-carved woodblock image but develops into a unique artwork through individually created backgrounds, color combinations, and expressive mark-making. No two monoprints are alike.
For me, this artwork is about how simplicity can create something greater than the individual elements. The tree, the color, and the space surrounding it work together to create an experience of harmony and quiet beauty.
The creative process behind this series is documented in my Ota Azalea Woodblock YouTube series, where I explore the design, carving, background preparation, printing, and presentation of these original works.
