Bowing Pine Monoprint #1 is an original woodblock monoprint that explores the expressive beauty of bonsai through the interplay of form, color, and texture. The gracefully bending trunk suggests a gesture of humility, while its extended branches convey strength, resilience, and quiet elegance.
The tree’s dramatic silhouette emerges against a vibrant, atmospheric background created through layered monoprinting and expressive stencil mark-making. Shifting passages of turquoise, green, and yellow establish an almost ethereal space, where the organic form of the pine interacts with the energy and movement of its surroundings.
At the foundation of the composition rests a modest, weathered bonsai pot, reflecting the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi—the appreciation of simplicity, imperfection, and the beauty that develops through age. The pot’s understated presence anchors the tree while allowing its graceful movement to remain the central expression.
What I find particularly compelling about Bowing Pine is its visceral beauty. The strong graphic character of the woodblock contrasts with the delicacy and complexity of the printed background, creating a visual experience that feels both immediate and contemplative.
