Bowing Tree Monoprint #2 – Sunrise Energy
Original Woodblock Monoprint | Japanese-Inspired Bonsai Art
Bowing Tree Monoprint #2 continues my exploration of the expressive possibilities of woodblock printing combined with the spontaneity of monoprinting. While the first monoprint evokes a quiet, contemplative atmosphere, this version is energized by a vibrant background reminiscent of the rising morning sun.
The dramatic, bowing trunk retains the visceral strength of the original woodblock. Its twisting form and extended branches express both humility and grace, qualities deeply associated with the Japanese appreciation of bonsai as living sculpture.
What makes this particular monoprint especially compelling is the slight misregistration between the printed trunk and its underlying colors. Rather than detracting from the image, this unexpected offset creates a visual vibration, giving the tree an almost living presence against the energized background.
These are the happy accidents that I find so rewarding in printmaking. The interaction between deliberate composition and the unpredictability of the process often reveals expressive possibilities that could not have been entirely planned.
The brilliant oranges, reds, and yellows suggest the awakening of the morning sun, while the cooler upper passages and rich greens below create a dynamic sense of atmosphere and depth. The modest, aged bonsai pot anchors the composition, reflecting the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, where simplicity, imperfection, and the passage of time contribute to beauty.
For me, Bowing Tree Monoprint #2 is a celebration of the creative process itself, where traditional woodblock imagery, spontaneous mark-making, and unexpected color relationships come together to create an artwork filled with movement, vitality, and visual energy.
Each monoprint is an original, one-of-a-kind artwork, sharing a common woodblock image but distinguished by its unique colors, textures, and background.
