Description
“Cambria Afternoon Walk” is an original plein air oil painting created during my recent painting trip to Cambria on California’s central coast.
I painted this scene near the Fireside Inn boardwalk while looking across the coastline during a cool and hazy afternoon. The filtered coastal light created soft color shifts across the landscape. Visitors moved quietly through the environment as they walked along the path overlooking the ocean.
What interested me most was the relationship between the figures and the landscape. The painting is not simply about the couple. It is about people existing naturally within atmosphere, light, and space. This idea also connects to other paintings in my California plein air series, including works created at Shipley Nature Center.
I completed most of the painting directly on location to preserve the freshness and immediacy of plein air observation. Later, I made only a few small adjustments in the studio. I wanted to maintain the spontaneity and energy of the original experience.
This oil on linen painting reflects my continuing interest in California landscape painting, direct observation, composition, and atmospheric light. My work often explores how people move through natural environments and how those environments shape emotional response.
