Dusk Light at Crystal Cove
Where Light Meets Shadow
Late one afternoon at Crystal Cove State Park, I found myself captivated by a simple but unforgettable moment. The last light of the day illuminated the sandstone cliffs while deep shadows gathered beneath them, creating a dramatic contrast between warmth and darkness. The scene possessed both strength and quietness—a feeling that seemed to suspend time.
Rather than chasing every detail, I wanted to capture that emotional experience of standing before the coastline as daylight slowly surrendered to evening.
Painting on Location
This painting was completed plein-air alongside friends during one of our painting outings to Crystal Cove. Working outdoors requires constant decisions as the light changes from minute to minute. The sunset transformed the cliffs almost continuously, forcing me to simplify the landscape and focus on the essential relationships of light, shadow, color, and atmosphere.
The brilliance of the illuminated rock contrasted against the cool, enveloping shadows became the heart of the painting.
