Description
Goyomatsu is an original mixed-media artwork inspired by the Japanese White Pine (Pinus parviflora), one of the classic species used in the art of bonsai.
This work developed through an extended exploration of drawing, printmaking, and mixed-media techniques. I began by studying the structure and character of the bonsai, then gradually reconstructed the image through drawing, monoprinting, transferred imagery, acrylic paint, and direct mark-making.
Rather than simply portraying a bonsai tree, I wanted the process of making the artwork to echo something of the bonsai aesthetic itself. The tree is carefully shaped and refined, while still retaining the feeling of age, movement, and natural growth. In the artwork, controlled drawing exists alongside less predictable printed textures and expressive marks.
The surrounding surface becomes an active part of the image. Layers appear, disappear, and overlap, allowing the Goyomatsu to emerge from an abstract field rather than sitting against a conventional landscape background.
Goyomatsu was also the subject of my multi-part YouTube series, where I documented the development of the artwork from the initial ideas and drawing through monoprinting, mixed-media experimentation, and the final mounting and framing. The series offers a look behind the finished piece and into the decisions, experiments, and changes that became part of its creation.
This artwork is part of my continuing exploration of the relationship between bonsai and contemporary art, bringing together my experience with bonsai, drawing, painting, and printmaking.
