Description

Ota Azalea Monoprint #1 brings together the traditional art of Japanese-inspired woodblock printing with contemporary monoprint techniques, creating a vibrant interpretation of a magnificent multi-trunk azalea bonsai.

Inspired by a bonsai created by Japanese Master Ota Shigeyuki, the composition celebrates the harmonious relationship between the tree’s powerful trunk structure, broad foliage canopy, and elegant shallow pot. The multiple trunks rise together in a coordinated movement, creating a sense of balance, strength, and natural beauty.

The artwork explores color combinations inspired by Japanese color theorist Sanzo Wada, whose carefully considered palettes provide a harmonious relationship between contrasting colors. The vibrant pink and turquoise background creates a dynamic visual space that enhances the organic form of the bonsai.

The bold graphic qualities of the carved woodblock establish the tree’s structure, while layered monoprint textures and expressive stencil mark-making introduce movement, depth, and individuality. These elements work together to create a unified composition that is both energetic and harmonious.

Unlike a traditional editioned woodblock print, each monoprint develops its own character through the individual application of color, texture, and mark-making. The result is an original artwork that explores the relationship between disciplined craftsmanship and spontaneous artistic expression.

The Creative Process

The creation of this artwork is documented in my Ota Azalea Woodblock YouTube series, where I explore the development of the bonsai image, carving of the woodblock, preparation of the monoprint backgrounds, and the final printing process.
