Description
Painted on location during my SOCALPAPA Cambria painting trip, “Morro Rock from Tidelands Park” captures my first direct experience observing the immense mass and textured surface of the famous Morro Rock from Tidelands Park in Morro Bay.
What drew me to the scene was not only the monumental geological form itself, but also the relationship between nature, industry, and everyday human movement along the harbor. The distant industrial structures rising beside the shoreline created an unexpected contrast against the ancient volcanic rock formation. Boats sit quietly through the waterway while a kayaker crossed the harbor in the hazy coastal light. Along the shoreline path, figures walked through the atmosphere of the afternoon.
Rather than simply documenting the location, the painting became an exploration of scale, atmosphere, and the quiet interaction between people and the coastal environment. The shifting colored sky and softened light allowed the forms to dissolve and re-emerge through painterly hue relationships and direct observation value structure.
