Description

In the early eighties I studied Fine Art at the Instituto Allende and Bellas Artes in San Miguel de Allende in the center of Mexico.  During my time I studied pleinair painting and figurative painting.  During my time I would walk the city and the hills around the town and take pictures.  On my return I’d develop these pictures into painting.  Most of these paintings have been sold and have gone off to their own life.  In 2019 I rediscovered these photos again and was inspired to revisit this creative time in charcoal.

This painting is of one of the beautiful gardens that are in San Miguel de Allende.  The town is located in the state of Guanajuato and is a high on a plateau 6,324 ft above sea level.  The light that shines in the garden is bright which creates these beautiful contrasts between sunlight and shadow.  The trees and foliage of the park give this a spiritual scene of peace yet is a dynamic glimpse of time.

Charcoal drawing consist of vine, compressed and pencil charcoal materials.  The image is created by adding and removing the charcoal until the image is draw to my standards.  The result is a dramatic scene contrasted by the black charcoal and white of the paper.  My hope is that the tactility of the original markmaking and luster of the charcoal creates an exciting effect for the purchaser of these drawing.
