Description
Thom Walk to Shipley was developed from a morning painting session near the Shipley Nature Center with a longtime friend I first met in art school many years ago. Thom and I have spent decades painting together, discussing aesthetics, and thoughtfully critiquing each other’s artwork. Like myself, he followed parallel paths through both Fine Art and the Aerospace Industry, and that shared history continues to shape the way we observe and respond to the world around us.
This painting emerged from one of our regular morning painting outings near Shipley Nature Center, where walkers move through the park beneath the distinct atmosphere and light of Southern California. I asked Thom to walk ahead of me so his movement could become integrated into the composition itself. What interested me was not simply the idea of placing a figure against a landscape backdrop, but expressing the inseparable relationship between people and the environments they inhabit.
Southern California morning light creates a unique scenic drama. The angled sunlight, bold atmosphere, and movement through filtered trees produce fleeting visual moments that constantly shift and transform the environment. In this painting, the light becomes an active part of the composition, emphasizing both movement and emotional atmosphere rather than simple description.
For me, painting is a process of visceral and direct emotional awareness. The landscape is never simply scenery; it becomes a lived experience shaped by memory, atmosphere, movement, and personal connection. The familiar presence of Thom within the environment creates both comfort and universality, allowing the work to move beyond portraiture and toward a broader reflection on human experience within nature.
The motif ultimately became less about depicting an individual person and more about expressing how we as human beings exist within the world around us. Through observation and awareness of these quiet moments, there exists the possibility of reflection, connection, and a deeper understanding of our place within everyday life.
